Secrets...

They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.

There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.

Then I meet Lucas...

His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.

But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I never could have imagined.

High school senior Raielle comes home from school to her mother's low-rent Los Angeles apartment to find her dead, slumped over at the kitchen table, blood pooled at her feet. She and her mom had had a good two-year run, living together: the mom had been clean from her years of drug and alcohol abuse and Raielle had been able to live with her rather than in the foster care system. With the mother's savage and mysterious death, out of the blue Raielle is claimed by a half-brother she never knew she had. He takes Raielle across the country to live with him and his wife and young daughter in a small home outside Albany, NY. Like Harry Potter, housed in a sub-optimal closet, Raielle is escorted to her new bedroom in the basement. It's early springtime so probably it's dank and cold down there. Her bed has not yet arrived, because apparently the brother's wife is incompetent, so Raielle is shown to a sofa. Raielle gamely reminds herself that she is used to sleeping on a sofa in Los Angeles, and she doesn't let it drag her down. Her one object of comfort is a copy of Jane Eyre, a book about a young woman who prevails in harsh circumstances, among mean and even hostile people, in a long struggle for happiness. The book's plot parallels Raielle's life and gives her a sense of hope.
To Have and to Hold, a term used in wedding vows, is not a book about a wedding -- the "having" and "holding" refers to custody, and Raielle knows she can free herself when she turns 18, in June. The book is a story about the final months of Raielle's senior year. She is waiting to hear from colleges. She is a strong, ambitious student and wants to re-enroll in her new school immediately. I love the scenes at school and among the teenagers -- this author has a great handle on the high school gossip dynamic. Tall with long, wavy blond hair, Raielle makes an immediate impact on the scene. Boys start to circle and show interest. She sets her hat for one of them, Lucas, who is in all her morning classes. The romance between Raielle and Lucas shows two people fumbling between honesty and their own pride, trying not to reveal that each finds the other so attractive it "knocks you on your ass."
Everyone in this story has quite a large problem: a depressed, abusive mother; an unwanted girlfriend; a sick child; a hostile, passive-aggressive sister-in-law; a mother who abandoned him at a young age; a magical talent that is not well-understood and can be exploited. It is difficult to determine who is trustworthy. In the end, almost no one in Raielle's life is in it for Raielle, and things take a dark turn.
This is the first book in a two-book series. I recommend you treat this book as a standalone -- I could not finish book two (relentlessly grim).

Keep You from Harm Remedy Book 1 edition by Debra Doxer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

After reading countless books featuring horrifically damaged women and the violent men who control them, this was a nice change of pace. The book is written from the female's pov. She is smart, self-reflective, down but not out, resilient and I could root for her. The male is less nuanced, but tempered by my like of the female. The plot moves along with some not so subtle twists, but kept my attention. I liked the supporting cast and the effort at character development was appreciated. As a general rule, I'm too old to be overly enamored of high school angst and romance, but this was written with enough maturity and insight that I didn't mind. It ends in a cliff hanger, for those who despise such things. I didn't mind, since it was well written enough that I don't resent needing to get the next installment. For anyone else who is similarly tired of terribly abused women who get saved and spend the rest of the book in vapid tears wept on the manly chest of their saviors, this might be a nice alternative.
Secrets can be overwhelming , especially when you can't tell anybody in case it will backfire on you. Keep You From Harm reminded me a bit of the tale of Doctor Doolittle , where instead of the main character Raielle being able to talk to animals , she can heal those who are sick. All she has in this world is her mother , who can do the same thing. What happens next though is that Raielle will come home from school and find her mother dead , murdered and left in her own pool of blood. From then on , Raielle finds out that she has a family elsewhere that includes her brother and her grandmother . Her brother takes her in to his family and Raielle meets Lucas who is hiding his own fair share of secrets. Soon the pair will become closer and he will become her rock as she tries to find out what happened to her mother. When she meets her grandmother, she discovers the truth of why her mother quit sharing her gift and made sure that Raielle lived by the rules she created. What will happen to Raielle when she has to heal somebody she loves ? Will she discover the consequences of breaking the rules of healing and will it be something that she can live with ? This was such an amazing book, that left me wanting to tell the world about it after I had finished it ) Definitely one for all to read.
I loved the story and the main character Raielle but I did not love the love story between her and Lucas. He seemed like an abusive boyfriend to me... always telling her what to do and what not to do, starting fights with men that looked at her, ignoring her when he's in a bad mood. And they fought all the time. It was kinda disturbing and I would hate to think that a younger person that read this book would feel that is the right way for a man to act. I didn't even think that their 'connection' was all that great.... I mean.... who wants a boyfriend thats moody, bossy and makes decisions for you?!?!? I just hope that in the second book she meets someone else. Story is pretty awesome but the love story almost ruined it.... I skimmed through a lot of the parts with Raielle and Lucas towards the end.
Wow. Wow. Okay, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this, but it sure took me by surprise.

The read isn’t fast paced, it kind of goes a little slow and steady, but trust me, the story got me hooked.

I thought this was a regular story, pained past of Raielle, her mother getting murdered, moving, and starting a new school, and finally meeting Lucas.

No, not plain at all. There’s so much drama and secrets that sneak in, it’s ridiculous.

Lucas and Raielle. She is so used to not being the center of attention. Not used to having love. But Lucas changes all of that. They have a small love hate at first, but after, I love them together.

This turned into a paranormal with a twist and I didn’t see it coming.

And I could not put it down! Getting the second book!

This gets 4 PIGGIES!
